I think everyone would agree that puppies are just the cutest things in the whole world, much like babies.   Maybe even cutter (I say that after being up several times throughout the night with my 1 year old little girl), however just like babies, they take a lot of time.   Having had 3 kids and 4 dogs, all from the puppy phase, I would have to say that babies and puppies go hand in hand.  Having a puppy is just like having a newborn.  They are a lot of work !    So hopefully the resources that are provided will help ease you into puppy hood.

We have had in our 15 years of marriage, 4 dogs.  Our first attempt was a beagle named Cosmo.  My husbands name was Todd, so I thought how cute it would be to have a Todd and Copper in the family, named after the Disney Show.  Did I mention we were just married, and 19 years old at the time?  Still so young in so many ways.    And so, in my naivety, I decided to change the dogs name from “Cosmos” to “Copper” to make my perfect dream fit.

Can anyone guess what happens when you change the name of a dog that’s 2 years old?  Yea, you guessed it.  Should I have been surprised to figure out after several months of extreme disobedience, endless hours of running around the neighborhood running after him, and just plain naughtiness, to discover that the dog just didn’t know I was talking to him. As far as he was concerned, his name was Cosmo.  Who was this Copper character that I kept calling, and why did he get in trouble every time I yelled for this Copper fellow?

I wish I could say that I figured this out before we placed the add in the newspaper to give Copper to a new home, but I didn’t.   I wish now that we had someone there for us during this time to give us some good dog training advice.

In fact it wasn’t until we received a phone call from the new owners (which by the way, we held our breath when we saw their number show up on caller id), that we were told how great Cosmo was.  It turns out, when we gave Copper, I mean Cosmo, to the new owners, we also gave them the papers that came with the dog along with the name Copper.  They were quite surprised to read the papers to find out that the dog’s name was really Cosmo, NOT Copper as we had told them.  So they started calling him by his rightful name.   Next, they proceeded to go on about how obedient Cosmo was.  How well he got along with the other dogs, and in fact, they could go for walks with Cosmo and never have to use a leash.

Go figure.  So for this first bit of dog training advice, I would suggest not changing a dogs name once he has been named.
